Honey Creek Project

The Honey Creek Watershed is located in a poultry and cattle producing area.  As a subwatershed of the Grand Lake Watershed that includes an arm of the lake, Honey Creek is also affected by NPS pollution from residential and urban sources.  Honey Creek and Grand Lake are of concern because along with a tributary to Honey Creek (Cave Springs Branch), both are listed on the Oklahoma 2002 Integrated Report Category V list for pathogens, low dissolved oxygen, sulfate, Total Dissolved Solids, and chloride.

What are we doing?

The Honey Creek Project is designed to enter into voluntary agreements with landowners to implement best management practices (BMPs) that can improve water quality for the watershed.  These practices will be cost-shared between the landowners and the Oklahoma Conservation Commission with funding provided through an EPA grant pursuant to Section 319 of the Clean Water Act and funding provided through the Oklahoma State Legislature

Below are examples of some of the practices that may be available for landowners within the Honey Creek portion of the Grand Lake Watershed (see map above):

  • Riparian Area Management Establishment

  • Buffer-Filter Strip Establishment

  • Animal Waste Storage Facilities

  • Streambank Stabilization

  • Pasture Establishment/Management

  • Proper Waste Utilization

  • Heavy Use Areas

  • Rural Waste Systems
